Money Meditation (2004) is the final performance video in Lydia Eccles’s Meditation series (2004). 

In the work, Eccles withdraws a $100 bill, consumes it,  excretes it, then washes, dries, and redeposits it

—completing a visceral cycle of consumption and return—

an act of anti-capital resistance and a physical act of love. (1)

Based on the film of the same name from 1994 written by Helen Childress. Childress wrote the initial screenplay inspired by the lives of her friends and herself during the U.S. economic recession in the early 1990s. This take on the film asks artists how they pay their rent. Filmed mostly in Paris over a one week period and presented in the exhibition Issues of our times at the now defunct Castillio/Corrales where part of the film was shot.

"In Reality Bites (2013), for example, as the interviewer’s voice is chopped and screwed, and video footage gets caught in short redundant loops, artists talk about housing issues, the unglamorous fill-in work they do, how the latter is affected by old fashioned gender roles and how art itself can become a business."
